An excellent opportunity for a contract solicitor with experience of FS and/or digital tech to join one of the world's largest insurance groups. 

POSITION CONTEXT

Organizational Summary - the organisation is a global leader in financial protection, representing nearly 100 billion Euros worth of turnover across its 3 businesses (Life & Savings, Property & Casualty and Asset Management).

This subsidiary, launched in Sept 2015, is a new business unit dedicated to developing the organisation’s partnership business that makes up ~10% of the group's business globally. The mission of this subsidiary is to design, implement and manage relationships with selected global partners and support group entities to develop successful local partnerships.

POSITION SUMMARY

Working with the Travel Business Partner, the Legal Counsel is responsible for ensuring the provision of high quality and effective day to day legal support for all areas of this global insurer’s Travel Business Line including new business activities, relationships with business partners, product development and operations. Responsible for ensuring that the Travel Business Line activities are compliant with all applicable laws and regulations and the wider group's compliance policies. The role includes advising the Travel business leadership team on the key legal and compliance risks facing the business and working to develop practical solutions and responses to these.

DIMENSIONS OF ROLE

  • All aspects of the Travel Business Line;

  • To work collaboratively with others in the Group General Secretary team to ensure a one company approach and to help create an effective combined General Secretary team;

  • To work closely with the Travel BL central and local business teams with alignment to their strategic priorities, pipeline and appropriate resourcing of such pipeline.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Business Partnering

  • To provide business partnering support on all legal matters, by liaising with local in-house or external legal advisers if need be.

  • Focus on early warning on any emerging issues, including legal or regulatory changes

  • Ensure that work is progressed in a proactive and commercial way offering solutions and alternative approaches where appropriate

  • Demonstrate high levels of visibility maximising opportunities to meet face to face (within travel restrictions)

  • Working with the Travel Business Partner to manage the workload, demonstrating efficiencies in terms of cost and time Governance and control

  • Working with the Travel Business Partner, ensure that the Travel business team receives high quality and effective advice and strategic guidance on relevant aspects of its operations to enable legal, regulatory and control considerations are given appropriate weight and legal risks are managed/mitigated appropriately.

  • Work closely with the central compliance team, to manage day to day relationships with regulators and ensuring compliance with applicable national legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Ensure appropriate escalation of issues and matters requiring approval.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Qualified lawyer with at least 2-3 years legal experience in either insurance or banking sectors in the UK with an international company

  • Excellent understanding and experience of insurance regulatory framework in the UK and the EU

  • Ability to present complex legal and other information clearly, accurately and in a way that can be understood by the relevant audience

  • Experience in commercial negotiations with proven drafting and negotiation skills

  • Flexible, adaptable, able to challenge the status quo, sound commercial sense and the ability to make pragmatic decisions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively (both written and verbal) in English. Command of French and/or other languages would be appreciated.
